May 15, 2009 Fundraising Sponsored Swim

Picture 004In support of 'Action for Brain Injury Week' Mark Chapman swam over a mile at Havant Leisure Centre to promote awareness and raise funds for the charity 'Headway'.

Mark, 40 from Stubbington near Fareham chose the date to complete his sponsored swim to coincide with 'Action for brain injury week'. This year the campaign which runs from May 11th - 17th 2009 choose to focus on the importance of 'Wearing a cycle helmet'. Through raising awareness of this issue the organisation aims to reduce the incidence of brain injury to persons.

One of the most common causes of brain injury in young men are road accidents and this has been Marks experience. As someone who suffers from the condition and has been helped by the charity 'Headway' Mark was eager to do something for others who are also affected.

Marks 2 hr swim will raise approx £1000 in sponsorships which he will donate to the 'Headway' charity. The money will enable the purchase of a Summerhouse that the organisation can use to run activity programmes aimed at helping people with brain injury towards rehabilitation.

Mark has chosen to help others with brain injury by providing facilities that will encourage recovery through activity so it is very fitting that he chose a sponsored swim as a way to raise the cash.

Havant Leisure Centre and the Horizon Trust are very happy that they have been able to help Mark achieve this and play a part in raising awareness of the Headway charity, their efforts to support brain injured persons and their families, and their work to reduce the severity of road accidents through promoting the use of cycle helmets.
