Prices frozen for second year at popular leisure centres

Horizon Leisure Centres, the Charity that operates both Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres, has announced that activity charges at both Centres are to be frozen for a second consecutive year meaning that prices will remain at the same level as 2015.

The charges to access the centres are normally adjusted in January each year but following a review by the Board of Trustees the decision was made not to increase membership fees or general pay-as-you-go admission charges in 2017.

The Charity’s Chief Executive, Howard Broad said “The purpose of the Charity is to provide high quality leisure facilities at affordable prices for the communities of Havant and Waterlooville and beyond.

The decision to freeze prices for the second year in a row is good news for our customers and will help increase usage of the Centres and encourage more people in the community, to become more active, more often. As a result, customers will not only improve their wellbeing but their quality of life too”.

As a charity Horizon Leisure Centres provides a range of targeted programmes to meet the community needs these include daily teen (aged 10 – 15) gym sessions. ‘MEND’ children’s exercise and anti-obesity clinics, exercise referral schemes and cancer rehabilitation through exercise.

The Horizon centres provide a range of facilities and activities for everyone, including two award-winning gyms, two massive and themed children’s indoor soft play centres, a highly successful swim school for babies, children and adults, and over 70 other activities. January will see the launch of an Over 50s Sports and Social Club, formally known as the ‘Fun Club’.

In addition to the price freeze, Horizon is set to continue making improvements in 2017. At Havant, plans are underway to provide an extended Cycle Studio complete with state of the art bikes and a new Wellbeing Centre in the Gym that will house a range of toning tables. At Waterlooville landscaping works will begin in the New Year to help provide more car parking that will not only help meet existing demand but will also support a further planned extension to the centre in the future. To help encourage greater usage and meet the demand for more lessons the swimming pool programme at both centres is to be extended from January.

Sea world brought to life at popular Play centre

Horizon Oceans of Play
December 12th 2016

Horizon Leisure Centres popular children’s indoor play centre based in Havant Leisure Centre is set to complete its underwater theming this week.

The massive 4-storey play centre first opened its doors in 2004 and has proved to be a huge favourite leisure attraction for children and families to visit. This year the centre is being given a makeover and is being transformed with a new underwater theme and is now called Oceans of Play.

The first phase of the transformation took place earlier in the year and completion of the theming is taking place before Christmas. The play centre frame will see the introduction of underwater themed obstacles and activities and improved lighting. The reception and corridor leading to the centre will also be themed and there will be extended seating for families.

Horizon believe that the additional investment being made at Oceans of Play will improve the customer’s experience and that children will enjoy diving into the seas of the world whilst playing with their friends and family.

Oceans of Play is complimented by Horizon’s other large indoor play area, World of Play based at Waterlooville Leisure Centre, which gives children an exciting and educational tour of some of the major countries and cities around the globe.

Horizon Leisure Centre lifeguard saves the day

November 10th 2016

Horizon Leisure Centre lifeguard Harry Arnold has saved a customer’s life while working his second part-time job at the Harvester Restaurant in Rowlands Castle. Harry noticed a customer struggling to swallow and immediately leapt into action applying his first aid skills to save the day.

Harry’s comprehensive first aid training, alongside his lifeguard qualifications gave him the confidence to perform the ‘Heimlich’ manoeuvre – a technique known to dislodge obstacles, most commonly food stuck in the throat.

Horizon has commented ‘It is great to see that the talents he has developed through his training at the leisure centre in Havant and his quick thinking has saved someone’s life. Harry’s brave response has made the Portsmouth News with the headline “Heroic Harry puts first aid skills to lifesaving use in restaurant’’.

Horizon Leisure Centres runs training courses throughout the year for anybody interested in becoming a lifeguard. The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification course, which takes one intensive week, prepares lifeguards in the practical and lifesaving skills that can be applied throughout the leisure industry and many other environments. Job Success for Father and Daughter at Horizon Leisure Centres

The Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair held at Warblington School back in February this year has proved to be a huge success for one local family. The event was the initiative of Alan Mak MP for Havant who wanted to bring local companies and those looking for employment together for mutual reward.

The Fair attracted unemployed Purbrook residents Andy Gooch and his daughter Chloe along with the sole intention of finding a job for Chloe. However, after having a chat with the Human Resources Team representatives from Horizon Leisure Centres Andy lined up an interview for himself for the vacant Maintenance Assistant role at Havant Leisure Centre, the rest they say is history.

Andy successfully secured the job and has been enjoying his work so much that his daughter Chloe, an under-graduate at Chichester University studying Early Childhood Studies, decided to apply for the vacant Team Leader position for the School holiday Kids Club. She too was successful meaning that Father and Daughter are both now game fully employed by the same company. More recently, Chloe has taken up another position at the Havant Centre, part-time Creche Assistant, and adding a further string to her bow!

Andy said “I am very pleased that as a result of visiting the Jobs Fair for my daughter I was able to find a job for myself which I really enjoy with a good employer and nice colleagues”

Alan Mak said “Supporting local residents into work and backing our local economy is my top priority as local MP. My Jobs & Apprenticeships Fair this year was a great success, and I’m delighted Andy and Chloe have both found jobs as a result. Horizon Leisure are a great local employer, and I wish Andy and Chloe well for their time working in Havant.”

Horizon Leisure Centres is a not-for-profit charity that runs the Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres on behalf of Havant Borough Council. The charity employs around 250 members of staff, most of whom are from the local community. The new extension at the Waterlooville Centre which opened last summer has created a further 50 jobs for local people.
