Tone-Up at New Fitness Studio in Havant

February 13th 2017

Horizon Leisure Centres, the charity that runs Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres, is investing further in its range of fitness facilities by creating a Toning Table Studio adjacent to the gym at the Havant centre.

The Toning Table Studio will provide a warm, friendly and relaxing experience for people looking to become more active in order to improve their health and wellbeing.

The new Studio will initially comprise 8 Shapemaster exercise machines half of which will be power-assisted and will provide a great 30-minute workout session. The new facility will be targeted at attracting people to take up introductory exercise who currently are unable to use regular gym equipment either through illness, injury or simply living sedentary lifestyles.

The main aim of the new facility is to help and encourage people to start or return to exercise and to gradually improve their activity levels over time. It is planned that the Studio will become a ‘stepping stone’ to enable people to graduate into using the main gym and enable them to enjoy a more active and long-term healthier lifestyle.

Howard Broad, Horizon Leisure Centres Chief Executive said “As a charity we are delighted to be able to offer this fantastic new facility to encourage those in the community currently not able to exercise and to help make their life better”.

Cycle Your Way to Fitness at new Studio in Havant

January 31st 2017

Horizon Leisure Centres, the charity that runs Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres, is excited to announce that it is undertaking works to double the size of its current Indoor Cycle Studio at the Havant centre and fill it with brand new top of the range bikes.

Indoor group cycling classes have become extremely popular over recent times and the existing Studio at Havant Leisure Centre has struggled to keep up with customer demand.

The existing Studio is to be completely refurbished and extended into the adjoining room, formerly the Over 50’s gym. The room will be decorated in a largely black and red colour scheme and will incorporate special lighting effects. There will be 35 IC6 bikes provided by Life Fitness that provide all necessary interaction and connectivity to link riders to their work outs. The room will also house a new sound system along with a dedicated stage for the class instructor.

In addition, the Studio will be kitted out with a Les Mills based virtual cycling system that will enable far more classes to take place each week than at present. The new system is not instructor-led but technology is used to provide voice-over instructions synced to a choice of cycle-based movie scenes projected onto a large screen for riders to follow.

Howard Broad, Horizon Leisure Centres Chief Executive said “The new enlarged and state of the art cycle studio will provide yet another fantastic addition to the range of leisure facilities we offer the community at both the Havant and Waterlooville Centres. Cycling has become an extremely popular participation sport in this Country and we are delighted to be able to provide such a modern indoor facility to help meet the growth in demand”.

Waterlooville Leisure Centre Landscaping Works Waterberry Drive Frontage

December 27th 2016

Existing trees and scrub vegetation through the Waterlooville Leisure Centre site has been surveyed by an Arboriculturalist in consultation with Havant Borough Council. Some trees are deemed over-mature, requiring removal and much of the existing tree/scrub vegetation requires management.

Horizon Leisure are working in co-operation with Havant Borough Council to enhance the site frontage appearance, improve access for pedestrians/cyclists and to increase parking provision that will complement future leisure facility improvements.

To achieve this, existing trees and scrub along Waterberry Drive will be replaced by a more formal style of ornamental tree planting, with evergreen hedge and groundcover for a well maintained, smart approach to Waterlooville Leisure Centre.

Tree and scrub clearance from the Waterberry site frontage is programmed for January 2107. Replacement planting will follow directly after this during February 2017.

Horizon Leisure are keen to retain and improve the existing tree belt along the Hambledon Road as a valuable screen and wildlife habitat. Long-term management operations to maintain screen density and diversity will comprise selective re-coppicing of trees and scrub each winter to promote regeneration.

Swimming Pools to Open Longer

December 19th 2016

Horizon Leisure Centres, the charity that runs Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres, is delighted to announce that following a comprehensive review of their swimming pools timetable that public swimming sessions and swim school lessons are to be extended from January 2017.

As part of the review, customers were surveyed for their views on the current pool timetables and in the main most were supportive of the varied programme that met the needs of the community. However, there was some evidence to suggest that customers would like more opportunities to swim, especially at weekends.

As a result, public swimming sessions will be extended from 6.30pm to 9.30pm at weekends at the Waterlooville Centre and from 6.30pm to 9.00pm on Saturday’s at the Havant Centre for a trial period of 6-months. If the trials prove successful then it is likely the new opening hours will become permanent.

In addition, the highly successful Horizon Swim School programme is to increase the number of swimming classes at both Centres to help alleviate the current waiting list of children wanting to join.

Howard Broad, Horizons Chief Executive said “Swimming is an important life-skill and is one of the best forms of exercise available that will improve fitness levels, health and general wellbeing. We are therefore delighted to be able to offer the community extended swimming opportunities. We really hope that this 6-month trial proves successful so that we can adopt the revised timetable. We wish to encourage both existing and new customers to take advantage of these extra sessions, get back to the pool and kick-start a new healthy lifestyle for 2017”

Prices frozen for second year at popular leisure centres

Horizon Leisure Centres, the Charity that operates both Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres, has announced that activity charges at both Centres are to be frozen for a second consecutive year meaning that prices will remain at the same level as 2015.

The charges to access the centres are normally adjusted in January each year but following a review by the Board of Trustees the decision was made not to increase membership fees or general pay-as-you-go admission charges in 2017.

The Charity’s Chief Executive, Howard Broad said “The purpose of the Charity is to provide high quality leisure facilities at affordable prices for the communities of Havant and Waterlooville and beyond.

The decision to freeze prices for the second year in a row is good news for our customers and will help increase usage of the Centres and encourage more people in the community, to become more active, more often. As a result, customers will not only improve their wellbeing but their quality of life too”.

As a charity Horizon Leisure Centres provides a range of targeted programmes to meet the community needs these include daily teen (aged 10 – 15) gym sessions. ‘MEND’ children’s exercise and anti-obesity clinics, exercise referral schemes and cancer rehabilitation through exercise.

The Horizon centres provide a range of facilities and activities for everyone, including two award-winning gyms, two massive and themed children’s indoor soft play centres, a highly successful swim school for babies, children and adults, and over 70 other activities. January will see the launch of an Over 50s Sports and Social Club, formally known as the ‘Fun Club’.

In addition to the price freeze, Horizon is set to continue making improvements in 2017. At Havant, plans are underway to provide an extended Cycle Studio complete with state of the art bikes and a new Wellbeing Centre in the Gym that will house a range of toning tables. At Waterlooville landscaping works will begin in the New Year to help provide more car parking that will not only help meet existing demand but will also support a further planned extension to the centre in the future. To help encourage greater usage and meet the demand for more lessons the swimming pool programme at both centres is to be extended from January.

Horizon Leisure Centre lifeguard saves the day

November 10th 2016

Horizon Leisure Centre lifeguard Harry Arnold has saved a customer’s life while working his second part-time job at the Harvester Restaurant in Rowlands Castle. Harry noticed a customer struggling to swallow and immediately leapt into action applying his first aid skills to save the day.

Harry’s comprehensive first aid training, alongside his lifeguard qualifications gave him the confidence to perform the ‘Heimlich’ manoeuvre – a technique known to dislodge obstacles, most commonly food stuck in the throat.

Horizon has commented ‘It is great to see that the talents he has developed through his training at the leisure centre in Havant and his quick thinking has saved someone’s life.
