Havant Gym wins Gym of the Year 2017

May 2nd 2017

Hat-trick of Awards for Horizon Gyms

The gym at Havant Leisure Centre has been voted ‘Gym of the Year 2017’ by its members for the second time in three years in a competition run by The News. The large, modern gym which is run by the charity Horizon Leisure Centres, opened in 2014 and won the title of ‘Gym of the Year’ in 2015 in the same competition.

The award has been kept in the family, and is the third year that a Horizon gym has won the competition with the Waterlooville Leisure Centre Gym picking up the title in 2016.

Howard Broad, Chief Executive at Horizon Leisure Centres said “This is yet another fantastic achievement for Horizon Leisure Centres and we are delighted to have won The News’ prestigious award of Gym of the Year for the third year running and beating off the challenge of all the other local gyms in the area!

Winning this award is particularly pleasing as it is our members that we have to thank for taking the time and trouble to vote for us. It is the greatest compliment any operator can receive and an endorsement for all the hard work and commitment shown by everyone who work at Horizon in providing high quality gym facilities for our customers.”

In addition to winning local awards both the Horizon gyms have, over the past few years, been shortlisted in the National Fitness Awards gym of the year competition. This is seen as a huge accomplishment for the two local gyms given the strong competition from around the whole Country.

Jamie Gargett, a long-standing member of the gym said “I am a gym fanatic and have been to many gyms but the Havant Gym is by far the best mainstream commercial gym I have used and we are very fortunate to have this facility and a team that listen and respond to our input.”

Plans for Further Expansion at Waterlooville Sports Hub

April 28th 2017

Plans have been submitted to Havant Borough Council to further transform the Waterlooville Leisure Centre in Waterberry Drive.

The Centre was extended in 2015 when a split-level gym, children’s indoor soft play area, café and increased parking provision were added.

Following the success of this extension, Horizon Leisure Centres, the charity that runs both the Waterlooville and Havant Leisure Centres, is now looking to make further investment on the site.

The Charity has made two planning applications for the site. The first is a detailed planning application for the reconfiguration of the existing car park that also includes the construction of a single-deck car park. The plans also include greater provision for disabled parking and improved access to the Centre for both pedestrians and cyclists with the inclusion of a new and enlarged covered cycle store.

The second is an outline application for a further extension to the Centre that will provide additional leisure activities. Although separate applications they are to be considered together as they are directly linked with each other. This is known as a hybrid application.

The exact leisure activities to be provided are commercially sensitive at this stage but the new facilities will be subject to a detailed planning application once the required infrastructure and car parking provision has been significantly increased to support both the existing and future customer demand.

The cost of the two schemes is likely to exceed £3 million. The majority of the funding will be provided by the Charity itself but over £1 million is scheduled to come from a S106 developer contribution from Grainger plc towards providing necessary infrastructure for the growing number of new residents of the West of Waterlooville housing development.

Howard Broad, Horizon Leisure Centres Chief Executive, said, “The Charity is delighted to be able to start the process of providing yet more quality leisure facilities so desperately needed by the increasing demands and the additional population of the area. The recent successful expansion at the Centre has shown that the demand for high quality leisure facilities is increasing as more people realise the importance of taking regular exercise. In order for us to provide the next exciting extension we must ensure we have improved parking, pedestrian and cycling access to the Centre.

“There is a growing awareness about the inactivity levels in the Country and the detrimental impact this has on people’s health and lives. The provision of new locally accessible and affordable sporting facilities is therefore essential for the community’s wellbeing. The Charity’s strapline is ‘Making Life Better!’ and we fully intend to carry on improving the existing Centres and providing new facilities to help achieve this goal”.

Waterlooville Leisure Centre Landscaping Works Waterberry Drive Frontage

December 27th 2016

Existing trees and scrub vegetation through the Waterlooville Leisure Centre site has been surveyed by an Arboriculturalist in consultation with Havant Borough Council. Some trees are deemed over-mature, requiring removal and much of the existing tree/scrub vegetation requires management.

Horizon Leisure are working in co-operation with Havant Borough Council to enhance the site frontage appearance, improve access for pedestrians/cyclists and to increase parking provision that will complement future leisure facility improvements.

To achieve this, existing trees and scrub along Waterberry Drive will be replaced by a more formal style of ornamental tree planting, with evergreen hedge and groundcover for a well maintained, smart approach to Waterlooville Leisure Centre.

Tree and scrub clearance from the Waterberry site frontage is programmed for January 2107. Replacement planting will follow directly after this during February 2017.

Horizon Leisure are keen to retain and improve the existing tree belt along the Hambledon Road as a valuable screen and wildlife habitat. Long-term management operations to maintain screen density and diversity will comprise selective re-coppicing of trees and scrub each winter to promote regeneration.

If you should have any queries or concerns, please contact Horizon Leisure on 02392 245900 or info@horizonlc.com

Swimming Pools to Open Longer

December 19th 2016

Horizon Leisure Centres, the charity that runs Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres, is delighted to announce that following a comprehensive review of their swimming pools timetable that public swimming sessions and swim school lessons are to be extended from January 2017.

As part of the review, customers were surveyed for their views on the current pool timetables and in the main most were supportive of the varied programme that met the needs of the community. However, there was some evidence to suggest that customers would like more opportunities to swim, especially at weekends.

As a result, public swimming sessions will be extended from 6.30pm to 9.30pm at weekends at the Waterlooville Centre and from 6.30pm to 9.00pm on Saturday’s at the Havant Centre for a trial period of 6-months. If the trials prove successful then it is likely the new opening hours will become permanent.

In addition, the highly successful Horizon Swim School programme is to increase the number of swimming classes at both Centres to help alleviate the current waiting list of children wanting to join.

Howard Broad, Horizons Chief Executive said “Swimming is an important life-skill and is one of the best forms of exercise available that will improve fitness levels, health and general wellbeing. We are therefore delighted to be able to offer the community extended swimming opportunities. We really hope that this 6-month trial proves successful so that we can adopt the revised timetable. We wish to encourage both existing and new customers to take advantage of these extra sessions, get back to the pool and kick-start a new healthy lifestyle for 2017”
