Havant Leisure Centre Gym has been shortlisted for a prestigious fitness industry award having beaten off competition from gyms all over the country.

The club has been shortlisted in the charitable trust gym of the year category in the National Fitness Awards, the biggest free-to-enter awards in the industry, which recognise excellence, innovation and achievement in gyms.

Horizon Operations Manager, Carl Shear said ‘it’s a fantastic achievement for us to reach the final six of a prestigious national fitness industry competition for the second year running. This hopefully shows that we are offering the local community what the community has asked for and comes hot on the heels of our recent ‘Gym of the Year’ award from the Portsmouth News.’

The national awards are organised by leading fitness industry magazine Workout, with support from headline sponsor Service Sport, and in each category up to seven finalists have been selected from the hundreds of entries.

The gym will now be visited by a member of the National Fitness Awards’ team who will take a look around the facilities, interview the manager and chat to members and staff before compiling a comprehensive report, which will then be passed on to an expert judging panel to choose the worthy winners.

They will be revealed at a glittering awards ceremony on Friday December 4 at The Athena in Leicester, which will be hosted by fitness entrepreneur and TV personality Katie Bulmer-Cooke and Olympic swimmer and commentator Steve Parry.

National Fitness Awards’ director Judith Halkerston said: “It’s been another great year for the National Fitness Awards with an excellent standard of entries – the work going on in fitness facilities up and down the country is inspirational and every gym which has made the shortlist should be very proud of their achievement thus far. Congratulations to them all.

“The NFA team members are busy packing their bags and preparing to travel thousands of miles from as far north as Aberdeen to Cornwall and The Channel Islands in the south to see the fantastic work that is going on up and down the country every day within the health and fitness industry.”

Howard Broad, Horizon Chief Executive added ‘For a leisure provider operating from Havant and Waterlooville, it’s a great achievement to be shortlisted in this national fitness awards competition for the second year running. The team at Horizon have worked tirelessly to deliver a fantastic new gym at Havant Leisure Centre which has been much appreciated by our members and as a charity we are proud of the high standard of facility we have provided to the local community’.

This summer, June 2015, we also opened our brand new facilities at Waterlooville Leisure including a new three storey gym and studio, indoor play Centre with party rooms and a new café.

Resistance equipment covers every muscle group in the body and comprises a great selection of free-weight machines and weights alongside a functional training area.

The spacious new air-conditioned exercise studio means there will be a bigger and wider range of group fitness classes. Horizon Leisure Centres have programmed a wide-range of over 50 classes a week at Waterlooville Leisure Centre with pay-as-you-go options making the classes accessible for everyone.

Harry Abbott a member Horizon Leisure Centre said “Having been a member of Waterlooville Leisure Centre since December 2014, I am extremely excited for the opening of the new gym and the additional facilities it will bring.

The greater selection of free-weight machines and weights will be particularly useful. It will be motivating to have new equipment to incorporate into my work outs to ensure I can constantly challenge myself and push towards achieving my fitness goals.”

Despite the significant investment made by Horizon, membership prices have been frozen in order to encourage greater participation and help improve the health and well-being of the community.
